Sr. Phyllis Hughes started working in health care so long ago, there were no copy machines and no computers. Intensive care units were a brand-new idea.More than 51 years later, the Mercy sister had a chance to look back on that career as she accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Catholic Health Association on June 10.

The community that became the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration always wanted to practice perpetual adoration, but bishops were doubtful of their stamina. Today, the community in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is looking forward to marking a special anniversary on Aug. 1, as they continue to receive about 30,000 prayer requests per year. "It's like being a witness to someone's most vulnerable moments with God," said Sr. Sarah Hennessey, the congregation's adoration coordinator.

"Each of us has busy days and a busy life, but that does not give us permission to disregard the sacredness of another who enters our world of deadlines. … If we continue to meet all the deadlines and miss the persons or experiences in our daily lives, we most certainly will encounter the 'dead-lines' that have no heartbeat or response to the life-giving mystery of God's people in our lives."
