Sr. Mary Joel Kolmer was a teacher, a mentor, spiritual director, and a den mother to young Liberian novitiate nuns. She was Sr. Shirley Kolmer’s cousin from Waterloo, Illinois, and had been an educator for 25 years. In 1982, she followed her vocation to Liberia and served the community for 10 years. She was ambushed and killed by gunmen on Oct. 20, 1992, along a dirt road as she traveled with Sr. Barbara Ann Muttra to drop a worker home. She was 58 years old. Her Liberian community remembers her as an artist and a humorous lover of music and dance, according to the congregation’s website.
