"The Ball of Red String" Leads Children to Jesus

The Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville in New York have released a free read-aloud video of the popular book The Ball of Red String.(Scroll down for the link.)  This online resource visually presents a meditative book — re-printed by Loyola Press, now with new illustrations by Carrie Schuler — which leads children on a peaceful journey to “find Jesus.” This guided meditation, read by Amityville Dominican Sister Joy Castiglione, will help children understand that they can talk to God any time and about anything.

Author Marlene Halpin, OP, was a prolific writer and was considered a foremost leader in teaching children how to pray.  This month, Sister Marlene would have been 97 years old.   The video was produced by the Sisters of St. Dominic Communications Office.

"She proved her assumption that children are natural contemplatives through her books which flowed from her experiences with the children," said Amityville Dominican Sister Joy, a good friend of Sister Marlene. "She taught every grade level and was extremely creative and effective. Her many books have not only helped children but also adults."

The Ball of Red String is a perfect tool for quiet time, bedtime, or contemplative reflection for children ages six to ten years old.
