Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Two sisters share their dialogue, in hopes of raising awareness about suffering in Myanmar. Sr. Sung Hee Moon of Korea speaks with Sr. Ann Nu Tawng, whose photo begging soldiers to not shoot protestors went viral this year.

I traveled 12 hours to attend a workshop organized by Africa Faith and Justice Network, and the Tanzanian Catholic Association of Sisters. The workshop inspired me to raise my voice against trafficking and abuse of the vulnerable.

The National Black Sisters' Conference said anti-racism efforts are not only far different from Los Angeles Archbishop José Gomez's characterization of them as "pseudo-religions," they are in line with the Gospel.

Presentation Sr. Imelda Wickham followed a call to be with people in prison. She was a prison chaplain for 20 years. Her new book spotlights Ireland's dysfunctional criminal justice system.

When Sr. Ann Kendrick arrived in Apopka, Florida, 50 years ago, "It was a very segregated and racist reality," she said. She and the team of three other Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur saw their work there as figuring out "what the issues are, what the hopes and dreams are" of the people who lived there."

Sisters in Nigeria go out daily to give hope to people all over the country, in spite of physical dangers. Our experiences as sisters in Nigeria will be an encouragement to others in other parts of the world.

I kept informed about social justice issues. I wrote to elected officials, but I never stood out publicly with a sign. Then I did, to keep the message of racial injustice in front of all of us.

Congregations such as the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids had frequently held public vigils and protests to bring attention to issues like climate change, migration and racism before the pandemic. The voting guide is an extension of their actions.
