Latin America regional correspondent

Be part of an award-winning team that covers the world from a unique perspective: through the mission, ministries and religious life of Catholic sisters.

Global Sisters Report is looking for a full-time bilingual (English/Spanish) reporter to help head up our Latin American coverage. The position reports to the GSR international editor and works with other editors and members of the GSR team, plus editors and staffers at National Catholic Reporter on occasion, to fulfill GSR's mission to be a "dynamic online community that reports on and gives voice to women religious around the world."

The Latin American correspondent would be expected to:

  • Pitch and report on the ministries of Catholic sisters in Central and South America as well as the trends of religious life in that region. While some stories can be covered remotely, this position will frequently require pre- approved trips for in-person reporting and photography. Topics include but are not limited to migration and forced displacement, human trafficking, environmentalism, homelessness and poverty, restorative justice, social service programs, and spirituality.
  • Develop a network of freelance writers and stringers throughout Latin America who can pitch stories and help GSR cover news that requires a quick turnaround. The Latin American correspondent often will be the first to edit these stories, most of which will likely be written in Spanish.
  • Work with the international editor on developing the Spanish-language edition of the website, identifying stories to translate into Spanish and contributing original reporting and writing submitted in Spanish (both by the correspondent and freelancers).
  • Report on the work of sisters along the U.S.-Mexico border, focusing on ministries and developing news related to migrants and refugees.
  • Cover other U.S.-based and general-topic assignments as needed, including contributing to GSR's Monday blog and submitting Q&As.
  • Attend a weekly staff meeting via Zoom, as well as quarterly planning meetings, plus other meetings as needed with the International Editor and others to help develop the Spanish-language edition and with freelancers about assignments.
  • Help with social media and promotion of Spanish-language Global Sisters Report content.
  • Regularly and quickly respond to emails from inside and outside of the organization and to Slack messages from colleagues.

The ideal candidate has these qualifications:

  • Fluent in English and Spanish, as this person likely will be expected to write in both languages.
  • Familiarity with the Catholic Church, especially Catholic social teaching, and the roles and background about Catholic sisters
  • A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field, plus minimum five years of reporting experience. Previous experience in editing is a plus.
  • Expertise in Slack and Google Workspace. Familiarity with Drupal or other content management systems as well as AP style and Catholic News Service style.
  • Work from a home base, ideally located near a U.S. international airport or the U.S.- Mexico border or in Latin America.
