Date of Death
March 15, 2020

On Sunday, March 15, 2020, Sr. Henrietta Alokha was killed in an explosion that occurred near Bethlehem Girls College in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos State, Nigeria. She was the center administrator and on that fateful day, she was celebrating mass when the explosion occurred, engulfing surrounding buildings with fire and thick smoke and seriously damaging other buildings. Alokha managed to rescue all the children under her charge but she could not make it out of the school building herself.

The Archbishop of Lagos commemorated her as a hero for rescuing more than 300 students. She was a Sister of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a congregation that is recognized as one of Nigeria’s first indigenous religious orders pioneered by Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu on April 6, 1975.
