Daughters of Resurrection Sr. Germaine Nyagira was killed on August 24, 1998 along with two other members of the Daughters of the Resurrection, Srs. Adrienne Kagarabi and Germaine Lugolo, by eastern Congo rebels in a massacre that left 37 people dead. The slain were refugees who had gathered at a remote parish in Kasika near the town of Uvira, in South Kivu province. They had sought refuge at the parish after fleeing from rebel-controlled territories engaged in combat with Laurent Kabila’s government. The rebels were motivated to attack the parish on claims that the religious supplied government forces with food.
