Sisters Adrienne Kagarabi, Germaine Lugolo and Germaine Nyagira, all members of the Daughters of Resurrection, were murdered on August 24, 1998 in eastern Congo by rebels in a massacre that left 37 people dead. The slain were refugees who had gathered at a remote parish in Kasika near the town of Uvira, in South Kivu province. They had sought refuge at the parish after fleeing from rebel-controlled territories engaged in combat with Laurent Kabila’s government. The rebels were motivated to attack the parish on claims that the religious supplied government forces with food.
